Invisalign is an orthodontic system that straightens teeth using a series of plastic trays or aligners that are customized to fit the patient’s mouth. Invisalign aligners are made of clear, medical-grade plastic, so they’re very durable and almost invisible. In recent years, Invisalign has become a popular alternative for patients who want straight teeth without the hassle of traditional braces.
Invisalign treatment begins with impressions and imaging of the patient’s teeth. The impressions and other data are sent to a dental lab that specializes in Invisalign aligner fabrication. At the lab, the impressions are scanned into a computer, which in turn creates a series of virtual models showing the movements each tooth needs to make to come into ideal alignment. Then, the individual aligners are created using those 3-D models. Most patients need between 12 and 30 sets of aligners. During treatment, each aligner is worn for about two weeks, then exchanged for the next aligner in the series. About every 6 weeks, the patient visits Dr. Koo to ensure their treatment is progressing well. Most patients can complete their treatment in 2 years or less.
The Invisalign system offers several advantages over traditional metal or ceramic braces:
Refinements and developments in technology and design mean that the Invisalign® system can treat an array of orthodontic issues; still, it’s not always the best solution. Prior to treatment, Dr. Koo evaluates each patient’s teeth to ensure that Invisalign® is the most appropriate option to help them achieve their goals.
